REVIEW ON THE RILEY HOPKINS 150 JUNIOR – SINGLE ARM PRESS

by | Mar 10, 2022 | SQUEEGEE & INK BLOG

BEFORE YOU BUY…

The Riley Hopkins 150 Junior is a single arm press which is mainly used to screen print single colour t-shirts.

If you are starting out in screen print and want to know if this is the best press for you, you need to understand exactly what the Riley Hopkins 150 is capable of and whether it will be suitable for your printing set up. Here are a few things to consider before you purchase;

  • How big is your space?
    If you are working with a small space, starting out in a bedroom or anything similar, then the Riley Hopkins 150 Junior is a great choice! It is small, easily adaptable and can be put away into a cupboard or under the bed when it’s not in use.
  • Are your images all single colour?
    Remember you can only print single colour with this press so if you are planning on making your designs more complicated in the future, consider going straight to the M&R Kruzer (discount code : CRP5) instead. This will save you money in the long run!
  • Are you serious about screen print?
    If you are serious and want a good piece of kit to get you started, then the Riley Hopkins 150 is perfect. It is sturdy and robust and is the most professional single arm press that we have printed with.
  • What are you using it for?
    If you are planning on building a big screen printing empire, then this press isn’t for you… But if you want a solid piece of kit which is high quality, will last forever and helps you to create good prints, then go for it! We use our Riley Hopkins single arm press for live screen printing demonstrations. The press is strong enough to be transported constantly without damage and small enough for one person to carry and set up.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE RILEY HOPKINS 150 JUNIOR?

Remember, this press is great for single colour jobs only… If you are only printing in single colour, we currently believe this to be the best single arm press on the market. Our favourite things about the Riley Hopkins 150 are;

  • Stability. We use our single arm press for live screen printing demonstrations. Unlike our old press, the Riley Hopkins can be transported, used, abused and it STILL stays perfectly aligned with no need for adjustments.
  • Size. If you are looking into purchasing a single arm press, it’s likely that you are either a new printer or you only have a small printing space. Either way, the Hopkins 150 is a great starter press which can also squeeze into tiny areas.
  • Adjustable platens. This is a big one. The platen is on a bracket which can be EASILY removed without the need of a screwdriver. You can also purchase extra brackets (discount code : CRP5) so you can easily swap from a t-shirt platen to a canvas bag or sleeve platen.
  • Off contact. It’s hard to believe that some presses are sold without the ability to adjust the off contact. Luckily the Hopkins 150 can be adjusted using 2 methods. Perfect!
  • Static springs. The springs on the Riley 150 work in a similar way to the bigger presses, they are static and hold the screen in place. Other (cheaper) single arm presses, often use springs which can be turned by hand to adjust the screen registration. Except it never helps the alignment, only makes it worse!
  • Ease of assembly. We filmed the assembly of this press which took us a couple of hours… However if we spent less time worrying about lighting, this press would have been together in no time!

WHAT ARE THE NEGATIVES OF THE RILEY HOPKINS 150 JUNIOR?

Have I mentioned that you can only print one colour with this press? Apart from that… nothing. There are no shockers that we have experienced yet.
