FLASH DRYERS : THE WHY, WHAT AND HOW

INTRO

A flash dryer is used to gelcure plastisol ink after an underbase or inbetween colours. You would also use a flash dryer to achieve a perfect white on black print using plastisol ink.

We recently upgraded our studio with a brand new flash dryer and this is what we found out…

WHY?

We have been screen printing for a solid 10 years now and have never even considered splurging on a decent flash dryer.

HOW WRONG WERE WE?!

It was midday on July 23rd, a couple of weeks ago to be precise when our trusty cheap flash dryer stopped working. We tried everything to resuscitate it but nothing would work. We had a pile of unprinted t-shirts and customers asking for their orders which we could not fufill without our flash.

To purchase another cheap flash dryer would mean waiting weeks for it to arrive from China which is not acceptable from our customers point of view. So we reached out to many different UK screen print suppliers in search of a new flash. One company stood out from the crowd and gave us the solution we needed.

We ended up spending just shy of £1000 on our new flash dryer and I can assure you that it is worth every penny invested!

Reasons why a good flash dryer is important:

  • Even heat. Consistent heat radiation is the single most important element to this dryer, in my opinion.
  • Swivel neck. 360 rotation is something I never used to need. Until I needed it. Now it is essential.
  • Height adjustment. It’s just outright easier on this model!
  • Tilt adjustment. This machine has a levelling mechanism which means you can adjust the tilt of the flash to your platen, VERY handy. You don’t get that on your cheap model do you?!
  • Efficiency. A couple of seconds quicker makes a big difference when completing a long print run.
  • Reliability. Cant go wrong with a warranty!
  • Single phase electric. This is our personal problem. We cant purchase industrial level machines because we just don’t have the electric to support it. If you are a small studio or printing from home – this is important!
  • IT DOESN’T BLOW UP THE ELECTRICS. Just a little experience we have had with previous cheaper models.

If only we took our own advice earlier on in the game!

WHAT?

We purchased the ‘BBC Black Flash Cure, 18 x 24 inches”. There are lots of other models on the market today – plenty just as good as this one too! But if you are a home printer or working from a small studio, we advise this model.
