TIP 1: GET YOUR HANDS ON SOME DECENT EMULSION
Cheap emulsion is not good emulsion and good emulsion is not cheap! You can get your hands on hundreds of varients for different jobs but we prefer to use an ‘all rounder’ emulsion which comes in 2 parts – Screen Sol Q T with a powder activator. You can buy this emulsion and use our discount code CRP5 here: https://screenprintworld.co.uk/product/screen-sol-qt-emulsion/
TIP 2: MIX IN A LIGHT SAFE AREA THAT DOESN’T IMPACT YOUR VISION!
There is no need to be scared of light touching your emulsion, just be cautious. When we first started screen printing 10 years ago we were orignally taught to use emulsion in complete darkness… I’ll never take advise from that tutor again!
In reality, with most emulsions you can use them in ‘light safe’ areas which means you can see what you are doing without making a huge mess. ‘Light safe’ area generally means covering your light bulb with a yellow or red UV blocker. You can get these online or in your local DIY shop.
TIP 3: CLEAN YOUR POT + LID BEFORE MIXING.
This is our most sacred tip in screen printing. It’s simple and saves emulsion and screens in the long run. Have you ever coated a screen only to find out it has streaky lines and random blemishes? This is a result of poorly mixed emulsion. If you clean the sticky gunk off your lid and pot before mixing, this will be one step closer to the perfect mix!
TIP 4: BE THOROUGH!
When you think you have finished mixing your emulsion, mix it some more. And when you have finished mixing it some more, give it another stir!
TIP 5: LET IT REST
As you have just spent the last 10 minutes mixing your emulsion to perfection, it’s going to be full of air bubbles. Put your lid on and let the emulsion sit for a couple of hours. You will thank yourself when it comes to coating your screen.
